Indie Author Chat with Rylo Kinn

Meet Rylo Kinn—dark fantasy author, music lover, and one of the more entertaining souls haunting the indie author corner of Instagram. His book The Dragon’s Flute dives headfirst into the shadows of Drakonia, where sorcerers, knights, and demons all have a bone to pick with fate. Between his dark humor, philosophical streak, and refreshingly blunt honesty, Rylo proves that indie authors don’t just write stories—they build worlds and laugh in the face of deadlines.

Three cheers for the indie author community where we all do our best to cheer on one another. And in the spirit of rooting for my peers, here’s my interview with Rylo:

If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would it be?

RYLO KINN: It would without a doubt be Mr. Douglas Adams.

You are planning a dinner party. Which fictional characters would you invite?

RYLO KINN: Hannibal Lecter, Dexter Morgan, Jack Torrance, and Mary Poppins. I just think the conversation would be hilarious.

Do you think you were born in the wrong era? Or are you exactly where you should be?

RYLO KINN: I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, the universe is holistic.

If you could physically travel into a fictional book world, where would you go and why?

RYLO KINN: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. There’s this restaurant on the other end of the universe I’d like to try. I’m a foodie.

Would you ever want to live in any of the fictional places you have created?

RYLO KINN: It would be a great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

As a reader, do you prefer a series or stand-alone?

RYLO KINN: I prefer a series.

What do you love about self-publishing?

RYLO KINN: The marketing aspects, dealing with people, podcasts and book signings, the overall challenge of learning as I go.

What do you dislike about self-publishing?

RYLO KINN: It consumes all my time. Tough on a single guy.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

RYLO KINN:That’s tough. Each process has its unique flare. But there’s something to be said about the final draft.

What is your least favorite part of the writing process?

RYLO KINN: Waiting for the editor to finish.

What is your favorite reference book for writers?

RYLO KINN: The time life encyclopedia of things that never were.

Are you a pantser or a plotter? Or a bit of both?

RYLO KINN: I am a plotter. I’ve already outlined the entire Drakonia series: five 600-page books. If the first five novels are successful, I’ll develop prequels and sequels spanning over a thousand years. If not, I have ideas for two other book series that are different yet the same genre. Let’s just focus on this series.

What’s your go-to beverage when writing?

RYLO KINN: First draft coffee, final draft wine.

What’s your go-to snack when writing?

RYLO KINN: I sometimes forget to eat when I’m writing. Six hours would go by and I would think, “I’m so hungry.”

What do you do when your characters stop speaking to you? Or when they won’t stop speaking to you?

RYLO KINN: This sounds like an internal issue. I don’t believe in writer’s block. Writing isn’t a 9-to-5 job; a writer can write any time, day or night. Forcing this art creates pressure, which leads to panic, and panic leads to frustration. A writer writes when they write. A story is finished when it’s finished. The end.

What’s an opinion that non-writers have about writers that is completely ridiculous?

RYLO KINN: All opinions formed without actual knowledge are utterly ridiculous.

Do you have a word that you use too much in your writing?

RYLO KINN: No

When or where do you come up with your best ideas?

RYLO KINN: Randomly at any given moment.

Do you have a favorite character from your books?

RYLO KINN: No, I put my heart and soul into each one. A parent doesn’t have favorites.

How do you come up with cover concept(s)? And do you design yourself or do you have a designer?

RYLO KINN: The ideas and concepts are entirely mine, down to the last detail. I work with an exceptional cover artist who helps bring my vision to life. He offers valuable layout suggestions to enhance the final product.

What do you want readers to know about you?

RYLO KINN: It’s never been about money or fame for me. It’s always been about leaving a legacy.

What do you not want readers to know about?

RYLO KINN: Answering this would defeat the purpose.

Do you have a new book coming out? When? Title? Genre? Blurb?

RYLO KINN: A second edition of The Dragon’s Flute is on the horizon. It will include an “About the author” section, a map of Drakonia, and an HQ code for my upcoming website. Also, Drakonia 2 will be released early next year. I was hoping before Christmas but don’t want to rush it.

The Dragon’s Flute, Dark Fantasy

A dark and mystical place, Drakonia is a world where humans live side by side with creatures of legend. In a time of swords and sorcerers, a group of knights known as the Komalsh were appointed guardians of an ancient scroll possessing the spell to opening a crystal sphere known as the Darkstar. A prison holding six demons of unimaginable power. When the rise of dark forces determined to free the Darkstar threatened the Komalsh the kingdoms of Drakonia desperately attempt unification of world peace to rally the people of Drakonia. But the Darkstar has a hidden agenda, one threatening all life in the multiverse.

This story follows a powerful sorceress named Savita Cosmos and her adopted son and Komalsh apprentice Nyte Shade as their destinies are altered to face the darkest of all evil. As all hope diminished from the relentless onslaught of the Darkstar’s disciples, and the kingdom’s inability to create world peace. Savita and Nyte are forced to find the courage and strength to lead a group of unlikely heroes as they band together as one dysfunctional family to prevent the Darkstar’s disciples from releasing all evil. If they fail, time itself will cease to exist and darkness will shroud the multiverse.

True darkness isn’t the lack of light, it’s the lack of hope.
