Meet Rose J. Fairchild’s Aura Prisma Cordyline

Aura Prisma Cordyline is a character I haven’t yet met, but her creator, Rose J. Fairchild, author of A Shiver of Rainbow and Shadow and its upcoming sequel, A Swirl of Smoke and Stars (book 2 in the Taste of Faerie series), was kind enough to introduce her to me a few weeks ago. I hope you enjoy getting to know her, too.🧚‍♀️Make sure you read to the very end. I’ve added a creepy snippet from Vacant 🪦 Grave, Marnie Reilly Mysteries Book 4.

Q: What’s your full name?

AURA: Aura Prisma Cordyline

Q: How old are you?

AURA: I am 20 years old at the start of my story, “A Shiver of Rainbow and Shadow,” and although I still look like I’m 25, I’m actually 51 years old with many years left to go. Fae genes and all.

Q: When’s your birthday?

AURA: April 14th

Q: Where were you born?

AURA: The Court of Earth and Rain in Solacia, which you know as Faerie.

Q: Are you a main character?

AURA: Yes, though not willingly.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?

AURA: Dragonfly. Someone also called me Ghost once, but I refuse to claim that one.

Q: Do you have a catchphrase?

AURA: Not that I can think of.

Q: What do you do for work/career?

AURA: I am now queen of the Court of Rainbow and Shadow.

Q: Without giving anything away, do you have scars? Physical or emotional?

AURA: I have many emotional scars but no physical scars—although my appearance changes drastically from the beginning of ASORAS to the end.

Q: What do you know about your backstory so far?

AURA: I know that my ability to expose true colors—in objects, people, etc.—with my power caused a fair amount of discord with my mother and some former childhood friends. This led me to believe every change I wrought would bring further judgment and rejection. I always ran away from those changes and the people I assumed I’d hurt by exposing their inner truth. I finally ran so far that I ended up in the Human Realm. I met someone there who persuaded me to return to Faerie, which is where I am now. You’ll have to check out my story if you want to know more.

Q: Describe where you live.

AURA: The Court of Rainbow and Shadow is very balanced. Light and Darkness interplay, accented with an array of colors. The palace itself is decorated with white, rainbow, and black. There are brilliant flowers, forests dripping with life, lakes, rivers, and stunning waterfalls to center your thoughts. We have giant flowers and mushrooms, houses made of massive old tree stumps, and stunning stone manors. But I think my favorite thing about where I live is the freedom we have. Freedom to live as we choose and be who we are as long as it doesn’t harm anyone. That was my main wish for my court, and it has been the greatest blessing to give that gift to others.

Q: How many stories have you been in?

AURA: Two so far. The first was released in May 2024, and the other has been going up chapter by chapter to my author’s Patreon. She just completed the final chapter and will commence edits to ready book two for publication.

Q: Plans for future stories?

AURA: *Throws a sidelong glance at Fairchild.* I hope so.

Q: As a character, who is your favorite character in your stories?

AURA: I have a few, and some of them are spoilers, so I’ll go with Nox. My starling. He became my unlikely hero and best friend and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Q: Do you have superpowers or defining traits you’d like to share?

AURA: I expose true colors—both as actual colors and personality traits. I also have dragon-like wings, so I am able to fly.

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

AURA: I like the way I am.

Q: Are you a good guy/gal or a bad guy/gal?

AURA: Good. Definitely. *Her gaze turns distant, jaw clenching.* Unless you hurt my loved ones, in which case, you’ll end up as a pile of ash.

Q: Any archenemies you can tell us about?

AURA: Two, but…spoilers. I have my own in book one, but I hate the one from book two even more, because…well, again, spoilers. *Aura’s skin begins to heat and glow. Fairchild talks low and fast, working to calm her.*

Q: How about a love interest? Do you have a significant other?

AURA: I do! He’s beautiful: powerful, sensual, but also gentle, understanding, and generous. You’ll have to read my story to find out more about him and who he is, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. He’s addictively wonderful.

Q: Do you have any phobias?

AURA: Losing my loved ones and being trapped.

Q: Do you ever lie? Or are you always truthful?

AURA: I’m Fae. I can’t lie outright, and unlike others in Solacia, I don’t enjoy manipulating truths either.

Q: Do you have a best friend? If so, could you tell us about them? Their traits?

AURA: Again, I have a few. I’ll start with Nox, my starling. He’s quirky, feisty, and a bundle of love. There’s also my partner who I described above, and a couple of others who…let’s say they aren’t what you might expect.

Q: Do you have a pet?

AURA: I’m not sure Nox would appreciate being called a pet. He’s part of the family.

Q: Name three things you love.

AURA: My partner, the results of that partnership, and Nox.

Q: Name three things you loathe.

AURA: Manipulation, entrapment, the smell of iron (but not for the reason you might think).

Q: What’s your favorite food?

AURA: Berries of all kinds

Q: What music do you like?

AURA: Faerie music—wild, free, haunting, lilting. It heats the blood, and one can’t help but move and get lost in it.

Q: If you had a theme song, what would it be?

AURA: Hmm. I don’t know a lot of human music, but for my book, my author has chosen “Blue Monday” by Zardonic (featuring Reebz). I think it fits quite well.

Q: Do you like to read? What sort of books?

AURA: I read more in the past when I felt I needed to escape my reality. I enjoyed anything that flowed well and helped me ‘go’ somewhere else. I wasn’t picky as long as the story was good. Now, I prefer to get lost in the gardens or a certain set of beautiful blue eyes…

Q: Do you drive? If so, what type of vehicle do you have? Or do you walk? Take public transportation?

AURA: *laughs* I have wings, and if I need to go immediately from one place to another I’ve got Jumpers and a Shadow Crawler in my court who kindly transport me across long distances in a single heartbeat.

Q: What’s the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?

AURA: I’ve seen many beautiful things, but there are two things that have never failed to take my breath away. One of them is still with me, an awe-inspiring reminder of the power of love and togetherness. The other has been missing for years. I am hoping one day to find it again and have enlisted some rather unexpected help to find it. To achieve that…to hold—*swallows hard, eyes tearing*—that would be the most beautiful thing.

Q: What’s the most horrendous thing you have ever seen?

AURA: Someone I love more than anything was mutilated. I’ll leave it at that.

Q: Does your author make you do stupid things? If so, would you like to share an example?

AURA: I’d like to say yes, but the stupid things I’ve done—the stupid choices I’ve made—are because I was far too trusting…because I so desperately wanted to be accepted. I’d like to think I’m past that now, though.

Q: If you could visit a fictional place, other than our own, where would you go?

AURA: Wherever my missing piece is, so I could get it—her—back. I’ve heard my author is working on a collaboration with T.L. Brown about this missing piece, and I am hoping they come through for all of us with that story.

Q: Are there other fictional characters you would like to meet?

AURA: Jaenelle Agelline from the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. I think we would relate to each other very well.

Q: Do you ever worry that your author will kill you off?

AURA: *lifts her chin and stares at author* She wouldn’t dare. Especially not before I get answers about what happened to…well, Fairchild knows what, and the last thing she wants to do is cross the Fae.

Would the author like to comment on any of the character’s answers?

AURA: I agree with everything Aura said and would encourage everyone to read “A Shiver of Rainbow and Shadow” to learn more about Aura and the fantastical cast of characters in her story. I plan to release its sequel, “A Swirl of Smoke and Stars,” before the end of the year, though I have no official release date yet.

One thing Aura didn’t mention is that these books are for the 18+ crowd. There is violence, abuse, and explicit sex (both consensual and non-consensual) found all through their pages. Despite the darkness found in this book, there are overtones of hope and empowerment, too, so I hope you’ll pick them up and give them a read. Aura and her crew are born of my heart and soul, and I hope you’ll love them as much as I do.

If it doesn’t leave you with a shiver of fear and completely creeped out, I haven’t done my job. 😉

Vacant 🪦 Grave Snippet

Twelve marbles rolled across an old dining room table, marred with dimples, flaking varnish, and a wonky leg. The spinning glass orbs made a satisfying sound before skittering to a halt against the warped crease where additional leaves could be added for a big family dinner.

Two naked women watched in horror as their abductor picked up a marble and put it in his mouth, sucking it clean, then setting it on a bed of yellowed cotton batting. He repeated the motion for each, before inspecting them thoughtfully and choosing four from the dozen. Two bright blue with a white swirl. The others, amber with golden swishes. He turned to his company and put a finger to his lips—a warning to be silent lest he keep his promise and cut out their tongues.

As always, feel free to leave comments or ask me questions. I will respond as quickly as possible.

Thanks so much for spending time with me. See you soon! 👋

  1. I loved this interview, Shari! Great choice for a character Q&A. I love Aura because she is so delicate, but then a switch is flipped, and she becomes a formidable power. Fairchild did such a beautiful job of presenting this character in A Shiver of Rainbow and Shadow. The character arc is perfect and the ending is satisfying—even though there are some loose ends that make you hungry for book 2, A Swirl of Smoke and Stars.
