Indie Author Chat with Nannette Kreitzman

Updated: 11/5/25

Three years ago, I met short story writer Nannette Kreitzman while taking part in #IndieFeatureFriday on Instagram, where she’s known as @netts_shorts. This wonderful and poetic hostess of #IndieFeatureFriday is a brilliant advocate of the indie author community and is the author of thirty-eight titles available at Amazon. With forty-four titles consisting of thirty-seven stories and seven anthologies, Nannette is writing powerhouse. One of my favorite authors to follow on Instagram, she keeps us entertained with short writing challenges, book reviews, etymology, and the origins of idioms. Yeah. She’s pretty cool.

If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would it be?

NANNETTE:  I would love the opportunity to meet the fantastic indie authors I have grown to love!  We have so many tremendously talented authors in our community, I couldn’t possibly pick just one.

You are planning a dinner party. Which fictional characters would you invite?

NANNETTE:  My own?  As a short story writer, I’ve created quite a variety of characters.  It would be an interesting evening!

Do you think you were born in the wrong era? Or are you exactly where you should be?

NANNETTE:  I often moon over the times of historical fiction, be it the American West or Old England.  Then I think about my microwave and I’m over it. Ha ha!

If you could physically travel into a fictional book world, where would you go and why?

NANNETTE:  Usually the world of the book I’m reading.

Would you ever want to live in any of the fictional places you have created?

NANNETTE:  Probably not.  My characters tend to have a hard time of it.

As a reader, do you prefer a series or stand-alone?

NANNETTE:  Both!  However, while I enjoy a continuing storyline, I do prefer each individual book of a series to have some kind of conclusion.

What do you love about self-publishing?

NANNETTE:  Having a “free to me” way to share the stories I create.  Years ago, the only way you could get published outside of a publishing house was to pay someone.  I was quite thrilled to find out that is no longer the case when I got back into writing.

What do you dislike about self-publishing?

NANNETTE:  Between the algorithms and policies of self publishing platforms and social media, too often the cards are stacked against us.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

NANNETTE:  Playing with words.  I am one of the rare people who enjoys editing, and I do much of it during the drafting process.

What is your least favorite part of the writing process?

NANNETTE:  Worrying that I won’t come up with another story idea.  I spent decades without stories to tell, and always fear my last story is just that – my last.

What is your favorite reference book for writers?

NANNETTE:  I don’t use reference books, but rather learn from reading books by talented authors.

Are you a pantser or a plotter? Or a bit of both?

NANNETTE:  Mostly a pantser.  Anything I ever try to plot gets thrown out by my characters.

What’s your go-to beverage when writing?

NANNETTE:  Coffee with peppermint mocha creamer!

What’s your go-to snack when writing?

NANNETTE:  I don’t snack while writing, but I love popcorn while I’m reading.

What do you do when your characters stop speaking to you? Or when they won’t stop speaking to you?

NANNETTE:  If they ever get shy, I go for a walk.  They usually tag along.

What’s an opinion that non-writers have about writers that is completely ridiculous?

NANNETTE:  With regard to self published authors, that they lack talent.  I’ve read books by indie authors that surpass those of traditionally published authors.

Do you have a word that you use too much in your writing?

NANNETTE:  I’m constantly referring to the thesaurus app to prevent just that.

When or where do you come up with your best ideas?

NANNETTE:  On my morning walks or in the shower.

Do you have a favorite character from your books?

NANNETTE:  How do you pick a favorite child?

How do you come up with cover concept(s)? And do you design yourself or do you have a designer?

NANNETTE:  I make my own covers from free artwork found on Canva.  Usually I change the photo in some way (editing and/or combining elements) to make it applicable to the story.

What do you want readers to know about you?

NANNETTE:  I may write short stories, but I never skimp on the feels.

What do you not want readers to know about?

NANNETTE:  Wouldn’t you like to know.  Ha ha!

Do you use a pen name?

NANNETTE:  No, although sometimes I wish I had thought to.  I don’t have the easiest of names.

Do you have a new book coming out? When? Title? Genre? Blurb?

NANNETTE:  I’m always writing, usually publishing a story every couple of months.

Tell readers about your books:

NANNETTE:  I write in a variety of genres and currently have thirty-one stories published individually, as well as grouping them in anthologies of five stories each.  My most recent anthology is “Mistaken Impressions:  Tales of Misconception”.

Do you have a newsletter? How can people sign up?

NANETTE:  I have an Advanced Notice Team, people who wish be the first to know when my stories go live on Amazon.  Sign up by DMing your email address.

Website link: I do not have a website, but I do have a Reference Guide Blog where people can easily learn more about my large selection of stories.  See the blurbs, read excerpts, discover if they can also be found in an anthology, and enjoy Author’s Note tidbits.https://nannettekreitzman.blogspot.com/

Author Bio

Nannette KreitzmanI’m a retired stay at home mom and happy empty nester. I spend my morning walks dreaming up short story ideas, but despite my carefully laid plans, my characters always manage to change things up! I’ve learned to pay attention to them though, they’re usually right.

  1. I’ve been following Nanette on Instagram for a while, so this was a really nice way to learn more about her in her own words. Thanks for the in-depth “introduction,” Shari!

  2. Nanette is a fantastic writer and a BRILLIANT short story author. I believe it is more challenging to write compelling short stories than longer works. She is a master at it, making it look easy. Several of her stories have stuck with me long after I finished one of her compilations. As for being an indie author champion, she is one of the best. She is kind, supportive, and one of my favorite IGers to follow. I’m thrilled you featured her here, Shari!
